Deep in the Angkor jungle lies a temple unlike any other — Ta Prohm, the mysterious ruin where giant trees grow from ancient stones, their roots wrapping around walls like something out of a fairytale. You might recognize it from Tomb Raider (2001) — but its real story is even more magical.

Built in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII, Ta Prohm was once a powerful Buddhist monastery and university, dedicated to his mother. At its peak, it housed over 12,000 people, including monks, dancers, and priests.

But over the centuries, nature slowly took over. Instead of removing the jungle during restoration, conservators chose to leave it — turning Ta Prohm into a living museum, a hauntingly beautiful reminder of time’s unstoppable power.

🌿 Why Visit Ta Prohm?

Atmosphere: Unlike other Angkor temples, Ta Prohm is not perfectly restored. Its crumbling walls, tangled tree roots, and jungle setting make it feel like you’ve discovered a lost world.

Famous Film Location: Featured in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, it’s one of the most recognized temples in the world.
